A second day at McDowell Regional Park near Scottsdale, Arizona, I did this painting in the morning before the sun got too high and killed all the interesting shadows. This saguaro was all but wrapped up in the palo verde growing around it, and I'm told this is a sort of symbiosis which ends once the saguaro matures and the palo verde dies and drops away. The surrounding vegetation was chaotic at best…somehow I got it sorted out, I think. Such a profusion of plant life in the desert, and all of it seems to bristle with weaponry–a huge variety of sharp edges, thorns, spines, and so on!
