I painted this one on location on the famous Scenic Highway 12 east of Escalante, Utah at a turnout looking to the east. I painted here the previous year, and just can't resist these hardy cedars which are just too tenacious and stubborn to die. The desert can be harsh! I loved the contrast between the dark green of the foliage against the reddish sand and rock, and even this late in the year (mid-September) there's a profusion of color in the trees, bushes, grasses, and wildflowers here in Southern Utah.
