Painted during and as part of my month-long artistic residency in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, in conjunction with the annual Escalante Canyons Art Festival. I did this one from my photo taken at an overlook turnout on Hwy. 12 on the south slope of Boulder Mountain, looking out over a huge swath of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. As the high mountain aspens and evergreens give way to cedars and slick rock, the colors and forms of stone seem to march on forever, and I immediately thought of Pete Townsend of classic rock band The Who's words, "I can see for miles and miles and miles..." This is one of my favorite scenes in this beautiful part of southern Utah, and as I took the photo I knew I would do a painting of it.
