I took the photo from which this is painted way back about 15 years ago returning from a whitewater kayaking trip on Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River. I had stopped for lunch near the summit of Nine Mile Canyon, and this little clump of Indian Paintbrush got my attention at the side of the road. It's one of my favorite flowers, indigenous to the western United States. I love the interplay of light, shadow, and the brilliant crimson of those little blossoms which seem to glow with their own internal light.
